Connecting community
The Meadows is a community centre based in the heart of Meadow Well. For nearly 30 years now, we’ve had the honour of serving local people of all ages. Our vision is simple: to use the power of human connection to create a thriving community. And we work alongside those who live in our area to make this shared dream a reality!

What we do and how we help
By connecting community in the garden, at the cafe, to support, and to play, we aim to make Meadow Well a great place to live, work, and play:
In the garden
Our community garden is a place where both people and nature flourish. Not only is it a haven for wildlife, but it’s also a hub of fruitful activity. Here, we help young people & adults develop horticultural skills, host a fun-filled Forest School, and work with local volunteers to make the garden a more beautiful place.
At the cafe
There’s no better way to connect than over some good grub. The Meadows Cafe brings local people together with hearty, healthy, homemade meals at affordable prices. In our delicious dishes, you’ll find fresh fruit and veg grown in our very own community garden.
To support
We want everyone in our local community to thrive in each area of their life. That’s why we provide a range of support options for all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The why behind it all
Most of our service users live in the top 10% most economically deprived sub-areas of Chirton and Riverside. Our desire is to help reduce inequality and raise the living standards of local people.
For brighter futures
Since COVID-19, 41.7% of children are now living in poverty. To add to that, 32% of adults in our area have no qualifications. This has resulted in high unemployment rates and local people being stuck in insecure, low-paid, entry-level work. Our services help build better futures and prospects for all generations.
For longer, happier, healthier lives
Currently, local people will live around 11 years less than those living just 2 miles away in St Mary’s ward. This is due to a mix of poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise and alcohol/drug dependencies. We work with our local community to help them break unhealthy lifestyle habits for good.
For better mental health
Lack of housing opportunities, inability to secure better-paid work, and poor lifestyle all contribute to mental health difficulties within our community. At The Meadows, we support local people to have healthy minds and lead happy lives.
For an end to stigma
Due to a high-profile riot that took place over 30 years ago, our area continues to face unfair stereotyping. Our aim is to change perceptions of Meadow Well and help those affected by this prejudice heal.
