Our plan for net zero

At The Meadows, we’re committed to making a positive impact on the environment. Last year, we benchmarked our carbon footprint with expert help from Genee and SmartCarbon. Now, with a renewed, sustainably focused strategy, we’re striving toward achieving net zero. We even picked up a Silver Investors in the Environment Award for our efforts!

How we’re helping

Putting sustainability at the heart of our strategy

After joining VONNE’s Going Green Together initiative, we’ve changed the way we operate to put sustainability at the centre of our decision-making. Our staff-led ‘Green Team’ now makes sure we’re keeping to the commitments established in our Environment Policy.

Lowering our carbon footprint through fitness and ethical Investments

We want to be eco-conscious in every facet of our business. That’s why we ask our staff to play their part in combating climate change. All staff members have been encouraged to move to ethical pensions that don’t support oil or deforestation. We’ve also registered for the Bike2Work scheme, so our team can reduce their own carbon emissions.

Reducing waste and improving energy efficiency in our Centre

Across our organisation, we strongly promote reduce, reuse, and recycle. To allow visitors and staff to take action, we’ve improved our waste recycling and added more recycling bins around the centre. We’ve also gone green with our energy supply, as well as introducing LED lighting and sensors throughout our building.

Growing a greener community garden for a better world

Our community garden operates on organic and permaculture principles to reduce carbon release. We use only peat-free compost for the same purpose.

In addition to this, we’ve decreased our use of mains water in the gardens, created a small woodland by planting 400 native trees, and introduced a wildflower meadow. Oh, and the produce grown in our garden is sold locally or used in our own cafe!

Environmental education for the local community

The Meadows team are extremely passionate about helping people create a greener and cleaner future. Currently, we’re developing educational projects to show our community how they can take small actions to improve our local environment.
